Unhealthy Baby Toys Equal Unhealthy Habits

By Wheezie On March 10, 2010 No Comments

I went shopping for new toys for my 2 year old granddaughters the other day and was absolutely appalled by the selection of unhealthy baby toys readily available for our children.  I was so disgusted by the vast selection of unhealthy baby toys I felt I needed to vent here, both for myself and for those of you who want to leave comments at the end of the post.

It’s bad enough that we adults are bombarded on a daily basis with underhanded marketing tactics meant to brainwash and instigate hyper-consumerist tendencies, but some of the ploys meant to hook children through their toys is just plain wrong!  We as  adults can at least spot the rouse.  We may still bite, but we have the decision making skills and (for the most part) the intelligence to decipher when we are being catered to for our betterment or our detriment.  Our children simply don’t have that skill; which is why it is up to us to cut out the unhealthy baby toys.

McDonalds Burger Toy

The uber-disgusting McDonald's 25 piece burger toy. It comes loaded with toy McDonalds food to set your child ahead of the child obesity curve.

One egregious violator was the McDonald’s McKids toy line.  Within the french fry and burger casings, the backpack, and the kitchen setup were several dozen mini milkshakes, burgers, fries, and cookies.  I can’t blame the McDonald’s corporation for trying to make a profit and let’s be honest, they wouldn’t sell these toys if people didn’t buy them; but we have to realize that this is how our children recognize the logo and associate the golden arches with fun at a very young age.   This sort of brand recognition marketing will keep the obesity rate at a steady incline until we as role models stand up and take matters into our own hands and start to say no to unhealthy child’s toys.

I also saw a donut shop toy set…yup, donuts.  Let’s face it, any child that recognizes custard filled donuts and iced mocha before they even see the inside of the store is destined for cavities and diabetes… and that’s the best case scenario.

Like I said, I can’t blame these billion dollar corporations for doing what they do best.  We already know what they’re all about.  We know that for the most part they are cold, methodical, profit machines that will do whatever is necessary to ensure their fiscal well-being.  Building unhealthy habits in our children only helps their future bottom line.

It is up to us to educate and inform our children so that these marketing firms that are successfully initiating brand recognition at such an early age do not continue to feed the unhealthy habits that feed into the obesity epidemic through unhealthy toys for our children and babies.  They will continue to create and market these toys to our children, but we need to remember that the power is always in our hands to say NO!

We CAN stop purchasing these unhealthy toys for our babies and help our children form healthy habits…or we can continue down the same path.  Let our children be influenced by people who don’t care about them or their well-being.  Allow them to be another unhealthy statistics in an increasingly unhealthy society.  Or we can do what is right instead of what is easy.  We can value our children by valuing our purchases for them.  We can keep our integrity by giving our children a fighting chance against the diseases and dysfunction both instigated and ignored by the fast food industry.  Either way, it all starts by what we choose to surround our children with.

Dancing Babies: Part I

By Wheezie On March 7, 2010 No Comments

Ok, I don’t know why, but dancing kids crack me up.  Judging by the 100’s of millions of views dancing baby videos get every year, I don’t feel so alone.

For those parents that are quick on the draw with their Nikon, thank you and keep giving us material!

Here are some of my favorites.  Enjoy :)

Medela Pump In Style Advanced Backpack Breast Pump

As a CNP, a CNM, and a working mother, I have had a ton of experience with breast pumps.  What is one supposed to do if you need to work and still feed your breast milk to your child? This particular Medela breast pump, the Medela model 57060 may be your answer.

When my first son was still a baby and when I was able, I would use the breast pump in  labor & delivery, but that was assuming I had the time and I was at work.

Moby Wrap Organic Cotton Baby Carrier

By Wheezie On February 10, 2010 No Comments

Moby Wrap Organic Baby Carrier

The Moby Wrap organic cotton baby carrier is one of  our favorite baby wraps for several reasons.  In fact, the Moby wrap is not only one of our favorite baby carriers, it is one of our favorite organic products on the market.  For full description, video an pictures, skip below this preface.

Here’s the list of the Moby wrap baby carrier positives and negatives.–ANP78QQ3ZVBB

Positives:

  • The Moby Wrap carrier is simple to put on and take off; only gets faster with practice!
  • Simple to clean; machine washable and dry-able for easy cleaning and sterilization.
  • Wide, soft cloth makes carrying your baby more comfortable than ever.
  • Long and stretchy material makes carrying your baby comfortable and easy on your back.
  • The Moby wrap baby carrier gives you the ability to wrap your baby in several positions for both of your comfort.
  • Very affordable (ranges from $35-$69) compared to other baby carriers.
  • No more clips, hinges, or braces that you find in every other baby carrier.
  • Holds up to 45 lbs.

Negatives:

  • You will be upset you spent any money at all on any other baby carrier.
  • It takes a few hours of use to get down pat.  After those couple of hours of use and practice, the Moby Wrap will become second nature.
  • Though it holds up to 45 lbs, I have found it most comfortable at 35lbs max.  You can hold more of course, but that is my opinion.
  • It does need to be retied after a few uses, so prepare yourself if you need to continually take your baby in or out of the carrier.
  • The synthetic blends do not aerate as well as the natural fiber blends, so more washing is necessary.
